Culture : The Bodypuppets

Personality is the mask we carry in front of us. We speak and listen through it. It is a made up concept of specific sensations, emotions and thoughts that we believe ourselves to be. we cannot truly be seen, nor can we truly see, as long as we are trapped inside this solidified illusion. "Culture : The Bodypuppets" exaggerates and makes visible the process of separation.

The Bodypuppets evolved over time from open forms suspended in space that a person can enter or wear, into compressed shapes flattened and displayed like a scientific specimen between two layers of glass. In this way experience becomes a description, a story.
"Angeldunce" 9'x7'x3' - 1997
Mystery is controlled and contained in a square box and a tight frame. The process of forcing living matter into sanitized form, and defining it that way, diminishes the negative space inside. We remain outside, looking at it. We see breath fogging up the window on the inside.

"Kaspar" - 9' x 6' x 2' - 1996
Wir tragen unsere "Persona" vor uns her. Wir sprechen und hoeren durch sie hindurch. Sie ist ein erfundenes Konzept aus Wahrnehmungen, Empfindungen, Gefuehlen und Gedanken. Durch sie leben wir. Solange wir in dieser erstarrten Illusion gefangen sind koennen wir nicht wirklich gesehen werden, noch koennen wir wahrhaftig sehen. "Culture: The Bodypuppets" uebertreibt diesen Prozess der Trennung und macht ihn sichtbar.

Die Bodypuppets hingen uerspruenglich als offene Formen im Raum, so dass man in sie entreten oder sie anziehen konnte. Dann wurden sie platt gedrueckt und wie wissenschaftliche Exemplare zwischen zwei Glasscheiben zusammengepresst.
So wird aus einem Erlebnis eine Beschreibung, eine Geschichte.
"Mickey Mouse/Organ" - 1994
Das Mysterioese wird durch einen viereckigen Kasten und einen engen Rahmen kontolliert und in Schach gehalten. Die Entwicklung von lebendiger Substanz ist so in eine keimfreie Form gezwungen und wird dadurch definiert. Der negative Innenraum verschwindet. Wir bleiben draussen und schauen.
Wir koennen den Atem sehen, der von innen her die Scheiben beschlaegt.
